A Female Testimonial to Jiu-Jitsu

My Testimonial:

Hi everyone, my name is Kristine and I have been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for three years now with Mike Wacker as my coach. There aren’t enough words to express the value of taking a self defense class for a woman. Women need self defense techniques made for them! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was made for a SMALLER person to defeat a LARGER person. What would you do if you had to fight for your life right now?

First off, what is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu??? That’s exactly what I had wondered the first day I walked into Mike’s class. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu summed up is ground fighting using leverage and technique against your opponent WITH NO STRIKING. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is designed to allow a smaller person to defeat a larger person. Now that we know what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is, let’s look at some facts. In America, the average woman’s height is 5’5″ and the average man’s height is 5’10″. The fact is that the average male is stronger and bigger than the average woman. This puts us at a disadvantage here ladies. Unfortunately, crimes are committed against women around the world on a daily basis. An estimated five out of six people will be victims of either completed or attempted violent crimes at least once in their lives (Koppel, 1987). One out of four women will be sexually assaulted on a college campus (Hirsch, 1990). This statistic only includes the reported crime so it can be concluded that the actual number is much higher than one in four women.

However, we can do something about this!! Like I said before, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu involves NO STRIKING which is exactly the type of self defense women need because, look at the facts– stand face to face with your husband, your boyfriend or your older brother and try to punch and kick as they pull you away. It is very difficult to do. Believe me, I’ve punched a few male teammates at Black Hole in the arm for being idiots and they just laugh at me! Always out of love :) haha. Women need self defense techniques made for them!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was made for a SMALLER person to defeat a LARGER person. What would you do if you had to fight for your life right now? Try to hit them in the face, kick them in the groin, poke an eye? That is extremely difficult to do if you have never really prepared yourself for a situation like it before and you are scared — women are smaller, therefore their range of motion is smaller than a man’s so it is more likely your attacker’s punch will reach you before yours reaches them and their punch will be a lot more devastating than your own.

Blackhole Jiu-Jitsu offers an incredible women’s self defense class called Fight Like a Girl also known as Girl on Guard which does involve some striking but it is striking that uses the strengths a woman’s body has, not a man’s. However, this self defense class is based off of BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU!! So come take 2 free weeks of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to get comfortable and confident in using your strengths as a woman to fight back. Please don’t let yourself, your friends, your wife, your sisters, or your mother become a statistic.

Empower yourself and try it out!! I had no clue what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was when I walked in the door and I can truly tell you that Mike and many other amazing people that I have met through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Fight Like a Girl have changed my life and they will change yours. This is a fun way to learn how to protect yourself and gain the confidence to never be a victim.
